How to Post a Project on Fiverr as a Buyer (The Briefs System Explained)

Fiverr Buyer Requests — the feature where buyers could post a project and receive proposals from sellers was replaced by a system called Briefs in 2023. If you are looking for Buyer Requests and cannot find it, the feature no longer exists in its original form. Briefs is what replaced it, and it works quite differently.

This guide explains how to use the Briefs system as a buyer, what to include in your Brief to attract skilled sellers, and what happens after you submit.


What Briefs Is

Briefs is Fiverr's AI-powered project matching feature. As a buyer, you describe your project in a structured form. Fiverr's system then identifies a small number of sellers whose gigs and experience match what you described, and distributes your Brief to those sellers. You receive proposals only from matched sellers rather than from every seller in the category who saw a public post.

The practical difference from Buyer Requests: you will receive fewer proposals, but they will be more specifically matched to your project. You are not choosing from a list of fifty generic applications. You are reviewing three to five targeted proposals from sellers whose work aligns with what you described.


How to Submit a Brief

Step 1: Go to Fiverr and navigate to the Brief section. You can find it through your buyer dashboard. The interface for submitting a Brief walks you through the relevant fields for your service category.

Step 2: Select your service category. Fiverr uses this to route your Brief to relevant sellers. Be specific — choosing "Logo Design" rather than "Graphic Design" gets your Brief to the sellers who specialise in logos rather than everyone who designs anything.

Step 3: Describe your project. This is the most important field. The quality of your project description directly determines the quality of the sellers who respond and the quality of their proposals.

A useful Brief description includes:

  • What the deliverable is (not what the project is for — what the actual output should be)

  • Who the target audience is for the work

  • The style, tone, or reference examples if relevant

  • Any constraints (file formats, brand guidelines to follow, things to avoid)

An unhelpful Brief description is "I need a logo for my business. Something professional and modern." Every logo buyer wants something professional and modern. That tells the seller nothing specific.

Step 4: Set your budget range. Fiverr uses this to match you with sellers whose pricing aligns with what you are willing to spend. Setting a realistic range is in your interest — if you set your budget below what the work actually costs in your category, the sellers matched to your Brief will be at the lower end of the market, which is not always where the best work comes from.

Step 5: Set your timeline. When do you need the work delivered? This filters out sellers who cannot meet your deadline.

Step 6: Submit. Your Brief is distributed to matched sellers. They have a set window to respond with proposals.


What Makes a Brief That Attracts Skilled Sellers

Skilled sellers on Fiverr receive Briefs regularly. They are selective about which ones they respond to, because a poorly described Brief is likely to result in a scope dispute or a buyer who is hard to satisfy. A Brief that looks vague, unrealistic in budget, or lacking in detail will be passed over by experienced sellers in favour of clearer projects.

The Briefs that skilled sellers respond to consistently share three qualities:

The scope is specific. Not "I need marketing content" but "I need three 1,500-word blog posts on cybersecurity topics for a B2B SaaS audience. Technical but readable for non-engineers. Our existing tone is confident and direct." A seller reading that description knows exactly what they are being asked to do and can assess whether it fits their skills.

The budget is honest. A Brief that says "budget: $10-$25" for a full brand identity package signals that the buyer does not understand market rates. Sellers who see this either skip the Brief or respond knowing the buyer will need significant expectation-setting. Research what work in your category typically costs before setting your budget. The timeline is realistic. If your Brief says you need a complete website redesign in 48 hours, only sellers who are either desperate for work or planning to deliver something generic will respond. Realistic timelines attract professional sellers who deliver quality.


What Happens After You Submit

Fiverr distributes your Brief to matched sellers and you receive proposals in your inbox as sellers respond. The typical timeline is a few hours to a few days depending on how specific your category is and how active matched sellers are.

Each proposal includes the seller's message, a link to their profile, and usually a specific outline of how they would approach your project. Read each proposal for how specifically the seller addressed your Brief rather than how polished their message is. A seller who says "I've worked on three similar projects for B2B SaaS companies — here's one example" is demonstrating more relevant experience than one who says "I am an expert with years of experience who will exceed your expectations."

From the proposals you receive, you can message sellers directly to ask follow-up questions before committing. You can also choose not to hire anyone and submit a revised Brief if the proposals you received were not a good match.

If you do not receive proposals, the most common reasons are: your budget is below what sellers in your category charge, your timeline is too short, or your project description is too vague for sellers to assess fit confidently.


When to Use Briefs vs When to Search for a Seller Directly

Briefs works well when you have a specific project but are not sure which seller to choose. The matching system surfaces sellers you might not have found through search, and the proposal format lets you compare approaches before committing.

Searching for a gig directly works better when you already know the type of work you need and want to browse and compare sellers on your own terms. Searching gives you more control over filters — seller level, price range, delivery time, specific skills — and lets you see portfolio samples before any conversation begins.

Using Briefs does not prevent you from also searching for sellers directly. Many buyers do both for the same project and compare the options.
